On Tuesday, February 3rd, 2026, PG Darius Garland and a 2nd Round Pick were traded to the Los Angeles Clippers for G James Harden. In a deal that gained some hype around February 1st and 2nd, as reports started to surface about the Cavs being interested in James Harden. This trade comes at a time where Cleveland has won 6 out of their last 7 with a record of 30-21. It seemed like Cleveland was starting to click after a rough start to the season. But, with Darius Garland being labeled as “injury prone” regarding his toe, which he has had trouble with since he came into the league. Los Angeles on the other hand has a record of 23-26 and have won 10 out of their last 13. To Cavs fans, this trade doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. Darius Garland being the same position as Harden plus being 10 years younger than Harden begs the question, “Why did we trade Darius Garland?” The main reason being Garland’s ongoing, nagging injuries to both feet/toes. Harden offers something that Garland can’t most of the time. The ability to flat out score. Harden is right now averaging 25.4 PTS per game. That ranks 16th in the NBA. Averaging 4.8 REBS and 8.1 ASTS per game, Harden can do it all. If he can stay on the court, Donovan Mitchell and James Harden could be a scary duo for NBA teams to defend.
To Darius Garland, thank you for the past 6 years of being with the Cavs. You brought a swagger, enthusiasm, and love for Cleveland. You made it fun to watch Cavalier Basketball over the past couple of years even when the Cavs weren’t great. Best of luck in Los Angeles.
