The Ohio State Women’s Basketball Team is coming off of a strong 2022-23 season with a record of 28-8 and advancing to the Elite 8 of the March Madness Tournament. Falling short in the Elite 8 to the Virginia Tech Hokies, the Buckeyes awaited the future and the next season. Losing superstar Senior, Taylor Mikesell to the WNBA draft, the Buckeyes expected sophomore, Cotie McMahon, and 5th year senior, Jacy Sheldon, to fill the role and lead the Buckeyes to success in the 2023-24 season.
The unstoppable duo has been nothing short of amazing thus far, guiding the team to a 19-3 start. The Buckeyes are currently the number 5 seed in the NCAA Women’s basketball ranking and are in 2nd place in the Big Ten behind the Iowa Hawkeyes who are led by future number one overall draft pick, Caitlin Clark.
Cotie McMahon has helped create a 9-game winning streak for the Buckeyes, with huge wins over the number 2 ranked Iowa Hawkeyes, the number 14 ranked Indiana Hoosiers, and a 38-point blowout win over the Wisconsin Badgers. Cotie McMahon averaged 23.5 points, 11.5 rebounds, and 3.5 assists during the week of these games, earning the NCAA Player of the Week Award.
Three-point specialist and guard, Jacy Sheldon, has been undeniably one of the most efficient guards in the country. Backed by her teammate’s outstanding defense, Sheldon has averaged 17.9 points, 3.1 assists, and 2.3 steals per game all while shooting a whopping career-high 50.5% from the field. With Sheldon’s confident, snazzy, and collaborative gameplay, Jacy Sheldon will surely play a significant role in leading the Buckeyes in the March Madness Tournament.
The Buckeyes have a tough remaining schedule to the season with a rematch against top-ranked Iowa, a scrappy game against the Penn State Nittany Lady Lions, and a rivalry matchup against the Michigan Wolverines. In the postseason, Head Coach, Kevin McGuff, looks to pave the way for the Buckeyes by coaching and helping advance the team to the NCAA March Madness National Championship for the first time since 1993. With strong leadership, grit, and tenacity, The Ohio State Buckeyes Women’s Basketball Team will sure enough compete for the Big Ten Title, make a deep run into the March Madness Tournament, and have a shot to play for a National Championship.
