US Soccer and Cross Country Postseasons in Review

US Varsity Soccer made a valiant effort in the postseason, but unfortunately met their match midway into the playoffs. We had yet another excellent record this year, going 10-2-3 with 9 of their 10 wins being shutouts. The defense and goalie performance especially was a highlight this season, and they began their  playing Stow at home with high expectations. As usual, the defense persevered, allowing US to win 1-0 in a nail-biter. Braeden Piero scored the lone goal with 9 minutes remaining. US then advanced to play Kenston High in the District Semis. Mirroring their previous win, Kenston was defeated by the Preppers 1-0 with sophomore Aiden Ptacek scoring this time. Massillon High School was our next opponent, but sadly they were able to score in the second half and then hold their position for the rest of the game. The outlook for next year is promising, with a lot of talented freshmen coming through the pipeline. Our current juniors are eager to take leadership and be successful with another hopeful year of work ahead of them.

US Cross Country was also able to remain successful this season. The season was shortened but our accomplishments were inspiring. We were able to beat arch-rival Hawken on their own turf with a score of 17-39. At the prestigious Midwest meet of Champions, US finished in 4th place out of 9 teams. Additionally, at the Legends at Trumbull County Fairgrounds meet, US finished first out of four. It all came down to the OHSAA Division 1 District meet. US prevailed in completing the meet as the 5th best out of 25 schools, with Griffin Walsh winning 4th overall. The team then advanced to the Division 1 regional meet where their dominating run was unfortunately cut short. However, Griffin did qualify for States after taking 11th place, later placing 50th at the State Tournament. Hopes are up for next year as we hope to be adding some new skill from rising middle schoolers to the team.

Congratulations to both teams for such a great run, and we look forward to both teams’ performance next season!
