Sports are an integral part of University School. Almost all students participate in the athletic program and most attend games. Last year, when our hockey team made the State Semifinals, the vast majority of the school attended the Semifinal game in Columbus.
In the past, the sports section of the US News has not accurately reflected the widespread interest in athletics at University School. Our sports section has presented articles on topics ranging from international soccer to Major League Baseball. While this writing is indeed sports writing in the traditional sense, we must remember our audience. While only some of our faculty, staff, and student body might follow Premier League soccer, all faculty, staff, and students have a direct connection to University School sports teams. In that vein, the 2015-2016 sports section will be directed entirely towards the athletic teams of University School.
This year we have partnered with USPN, the University School broadcast station for sporting events. Led by Henry Ettinger and Davis Klimek, it provides play-by-play commentaries of US sporting events and is very popular among the student body. Our sports reporters will assist USPN in its activities and USPN will assist our reporters in writing game previews, game recaps, and team updates.
There are many opportunities for students to get involved with the Sports section. If students are interested in a particular sport/season, they can specialize by solely writing about that sport/season. Students are welcome and highly encouraged to work together when writing pieces for the section.
All of our sports teams are poised to make the best of their seasons, and the job of the sports Section is to bring that to attention of the University School community. US News Online is a community newspaper, and its sports section will celebrate community triumphs. Join us on the way to victory!
