This year’s Spring Musical, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, took the stage last week for three outstanding performances, marking a milestone 100th show for Mrs. Pribble. As I settled into my seat for Friday night’s showing, I found myself among a full house of students, parents, friends, and Dazzle Awards judges, all undoubtedly as captivated by the show as I was. This year’s production, accompanied by a live orchestra, offered a delightful mix of humor, audience interaction, and individual character exploration, resulting in an evening of pure entertainment.
The moment the lights illuminated the stage, I was transported into the world of a high school gymnasium, beautifully set to host a spelling bee. The attention to detail in the set design immediately set the tone for the evening.
Throughout the performance, laughter filled the air thanks to the quirky characterizations brought to life by the talented cast. This was by far the funniest show I’ve seen at US, as jokes landed in every scene from every member of the cast, even in the unlikeliest of moments with new characters like JC springing up out of nowhere. Although each actor was great, there were a few standout performances to me.
Portrayed by Ian Broihier, returning for his 3rd show at US, Leaf Coneybear stole the audience’s hearts with his endearing portrayal. A charmingly eccentric participant in the spelling bee, Leaf had a quirky demeanor and many surprising moments of spelling brilliance. His solo number was a highlight of the evening, showcasing his comedic timing and infectious enthusiasm. Despite his inexperience and the pressure of the spelling bee, Leaf’s determination and unlikely aptitude had me on the edge of my seat as I rooted for him. Broihier captured the essence of the character, making his enthusiastic nature clear; Leaf was just happy to be there amidst some intense competition.
Elle Richey’s portrayal of Logainne SchwartzandGrubenierre was nothing short of captivating. A determined and spirited contestant, Logainne grapples with the pressure to succeed while navigating personal challenges. Her emotional and complex monologue was a standout moment, as Richey skillfully delved into the depths of Logainne’s character, revealing her inner struggles and familial pressures and triumphs with authenticity and depth.
Hunter Isroff’s portrayal of William Barfee was another highlight of the evening. A confident and somewhat unconventional speller, Barfee is famous for his unique approach to spelling words using his “magic foot” as well as for his name humorously always being mispronounced. Isroff’s impeccable execution of Barfee’s iconic technique was just fun to watch. Isroff’s portrayal perfectly captured the charm of William Barfee, making him a standout character in this production.
The orchestra, led by Mr. Steve, added depth and emotion to every number and scene. Their presence enhanced the overall experience. Every song in the show was elevated by the live music, as well-choreographed and well-rehearsed numbers made the musical what it was.
Additionally, the show’s interactive elements brought an extra layer of excitement. Recruiting a speller right from the audience, Dr. Fallon shone on stage, adding a spontaneous and memorable touch to the performance. Every time he approached the microphone to spell a word, it brought moments of humor and unpredictability to the performance. Furthermore, as characters walked right down the rows of the audience, selling and tossing out concessions as if we really were at the bee, further keeping the audience engaged throughout the show.
As the curtain fell on the final performance, it was a poignant moment to bid farewell to Mrs. Pribble, who marked her retirement with this milestone production. Her dedication and guidance have undoubtedly shaped countless young actors who have graced the stage over the years. As she takes her final bow, we celebrate her legacy and the countless memories she has helped create. The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee was a great farewell-show.
