Team 128

September 24, 2017

The University School varsity football team has kicked off the year with a record of 2 wins and 2 losses. Led by quarterback Jayden Cunningham, the Preppers look to continue the success that they had last year. Last year, they made a great run but lost in the regional semifinals. This year the Preppers look to get right back where they were last year and even have their eyes set beyond the semifinales.

The Preppers started the season with a home opening win against Villa Angela-St. Joes. The score was 35 to 19. Their next two games did not go well for the Preppers—losing to Bay Village and Notre Dame Cathedral Latin. However, they bounced back with a confidence boosting homecoming victory against Maple Heights.

Over the first four games, Cunningham, who leads the team in both passing and rushing yards, has thrown for over 600 yards and 6 touchdowns and rushed for just under 400 yards and 3 touchdowns. Senior Joe Kadlic has rushed for over 300 yards and 5 touchdowns. Sophomore Nic Pujolas leads the way with 230 receiving yards and 3 touchdowns, while Junior Jake Kapp has 154 receiving yards and 1 touchdown.

On the opposite side of the ball, senior Lewis Allen has been outstanding. He has recorded 42 total tackles; senior Kevin Douglas has recorded 31 total tackles. Not only is Jayden Cunningham the quarterback, but he also gets time on the defensive side of the ball. He already has 3 interceptions.

In the win against Maple Heights, the Preppers scored first with a 9-yard run by Cunningham in a dominating first quarter. However, the beginning of the second quarter looked like Maple Heights was going to run away with the win; the team quickly scored three touchdowns. Eventually the Preppers beat Maple Heights with the long ball; Cunningham threw a 42-yard touchdown to sophomore Nick Pujolas and a 38-yard pass to junior Jack Voudouris. Senior Joe Kadlic ran for two touchdowns in the second half, propelling the Preppers to a 37 to 28 victory.

The future is bright for the Varsity football team, consisting of a lot of young talent and the commitment from not only the players but also the coaching staff.
