The newly-established Green Team is a group of 33 students and two faculty members, Dr. Smith and Mr. Wilhelm, who intend to lobby the administration and create specific programs in order to promote sustainability at the Upper School. The team was created on the recommendation of lowerclassmen who came from the lower school, which has a prominent recycling program and various committees dedicated to the schools sustainability.
The Green Team’s first major goal is to launch a better recycling program. In order to do this they have created smaller groups within the team:
The audit team has counted the number of recycling bins have compared to the number of garbage bins throughout the school to determine where additional resources should be allocated.
The labeling team will label trash and recycling bins all around the school so students and faculty can determine what goes in which bin at a glance. These labels will also inform students and faculty of which types of refuse can go in each bin (trash and recycling).
The video group will be making a public service video with the intention to educate and show the importance of recycling in the school.
Recycling is not the only project The Green Team has in mind. Making a compost container for the school is a goal in the future to prevent all the extra food from just going to a landfill. Another future project would be to plant more trees on campus and around Cleveland; the group intends to work with the Western Reserve Land Conservancy in order to learn more about the logistics of such a project.
Faculty adviser Dr. Smith stated that he Green Team’s goal is “all about changing the culture of the school.” The Green Team is currently recruiting new members—especially freshmen and sophomores.
