The
department has seen a couple of new faces this year at US, one of which being Owen Schaner, the 10th and 11th grade Geometry teacher.
Before Schaner was a teacher at US, he was a student at Heights High. During his high school years, you could find Mr. Schaner camping with his Boy Scout friends from Troop 22, or practicing the trumpet at home. After high school, Owen went to Miami University of Ohio and pursued education, a subject he is very passionate about. During college, he worked as a lifeguard at the Cumberland pool in Cleveland Heights.
After college, Schaner immediately began working as a math teacher. This is his 10th year as a math teacher, and Schaner has taught around the globe. He started in Savannah, Georgia, and then moved to Rome with his wife where he for a few years. This is Owen’s first year back in Ohio, and with the birth of his new daughter, Abigail, it should be an exciting one, full of discovery and learning how to be a father. Currently, the only thing Mr. Schaner has discovered is that sleeping is a bit more difficult these days.
When moving back to Ohio, Schaner “blanketed the state” with his resume. US was the first to respond, and after some interviews over Skype, US had concluded that Schaner was fit for the job.
Mr. Schaner loves the caliber of the food, maturity of the boys, and the warmth and friendliness of the faculty; something Schaner is very fortunate for after the birth of Abigail. “The math department has been a great support, co-planning our courses and picking up any of my slack as I adjust to being a dad.”
Schaner is also very impressed by the amount of free time the boys at US are given. “I really appreciate the amount of freedom that the students are given here…Most boys don’t experience facilities and unstructured time like we have at US until they attend college. That in itself is a great learning opportunity.”
Schaner plans to help coach the swim team in the coming months, and hopes to pick up squash to spend his free time on campus. Being a trumpet player and a participant in the Heights marching band growing up, Schaner looks forward to getting to know the music department.
Music is something Owen is very interested in as well. He likes artists ranging from the Beatles and Miles Davis, to A Tribe Called Quest and Snoop Dogg. When Schaner is not on campus, you can find him taking walks with Abigail, cooking, reading, playing video games, and “trying to keep the house in one piece.”
US and everyone in the student and faculty body is happy to have Owen Schaner as a part of our community, and I encourage all of you to go out of your way to get to know him this year.
