The University School Varsity Hockey team saw their season come to a close on the glittering ice of Nationwide Arena on Friday, March 9th. Although they fought hard and battled until the horn sounded, the Preppers simply could not match the physicality of the St. Francis de Sales Knights. The Preppers made an exceptional run in the state tournament, carving their way through the Kent District section. Defeating both Shaker and Walsh Jesuit in thrilling games, US was able to secure a fourth straight final four appearance.

Many argued that the team was not as strong as last year, and the loss of seniors could hinder this year’s team. However, with the help of goaltender Kyle Flatow and a transfer forward Andre Berglund, the team was able to prove the doubters wrong and succeed. The success came from a team with many offensive threats, while also having a stellar defense and goaltender. In seemingly every game, Kyle Flatow provided big-time saves that helped pushed the Preppers towards victory. Senior Captain Ethan Whetstone finished the year with a total of 57 points, leading the team in this category. Ethan provided an offensive spark that was much needed with the influx of younger players this year.

The Preppers were a fast team that could threaten opponents with their ability to effectively move the puck up the ice. This was showcased in Kent, when the Preppers defeated Walsh 6-2 in the District Final. The team came out with vengeance and rolled past their opponent on their way to Columbus.

While the season was ended with a heartbreaking loss, all of the seniors are proud of this season and are looking forward to cheering on their teammates in the future. The future is bright for the Varsity Hockey Team, as they have a solid core of juniors returning and a nice balance of underclassmen as well. While the Preppers fell this year, it shall be interesting to see what plays out in the years to come.
