Summer vacation, to some, is a blessing. To others it serves as nothing more than a long waste of time. What if we could combine both perspectives into a school year? Such a proposal goes by the name of “year round schooling”. Under this system, the school year lasts through each season, but there are more frequent breaks during the academic year, longer weekend breaks, and a greater potential for snow days.
Not only does this system spread breaks out across the year rather than bunching them more tightly, but it also removes the dreaded surprise of walking back into school and realizing that you forgot everything covered the year before. This cuts out wasted time (sometimes the entire month of September or beyond) of review on last year’s material and propels the class forward in continual acceleration through more information.
While it would undoubtedly be a shock to our collective system, the drawbacks of year round schooling stand nowhere near the massive benefits it could provide.
