By Kyle Hartson ’17, Tennis Manager
When we think of supporting our school’s teams, we usually imagine attending a rivalry baseball, basketball, football, or hockey game. But what about tennis?
Being the manager for this year’s team, I have the responsibility of attending all of the tennis team’s matches. Going into the season, I had never so much as seen a full-length professional match, let alone one at the high school level. For that matter, I didn’t know much of anything about the sport. Come time of my first match, I wasn’t exactly sure of what to expect. What I had in mind was a slow-paced, tame experience.
I couldn’t have been further from the truth. Despite my initial notions, tennis is actually quite electrifying. This is partly attributed to the team this year, and how well each of their personalities gel. From start to end, the noise doesn’t stop. And once you get over the absurdly complicated scoring system, it becomes quite enjoyable to follow.
But there was one thing missing: a student section. I would say I speak for both the fans and the players in saying that a large student section would add to the intensity of the matches, and give us a much-needed boost at home. Just as all the other sports teams stress the importance of student energy, tennis is no different. The presence of a crowd makes the experience more enjoyable for both those on and off the court.
Also, don’t forget to show J.V. some love. If you want.
