Following a tough division loss to division rival Baltimore Ravens and a blowout at the hands of the Pittsburg Steelers, the question remains: will the Cleveland Browns win a football game this year?
Since the NFL-AFL merger in 1966, only one team has failed to win a single game: the 2008 Detroit Lions. There have actually been more undefeated teams (2) than winless teams (1). The city of Cleveland has historically been plagued by poor sports teams. Since 1964, when the Cleveland Browns won the NFL Championship, Cleveland sports fans have endured decade after decade of defeat and misery. Yet in 2016, there has been a revival of Cleveland success: the Cleveland Cavaliers won the NBA Finals and the Cleveland Indians made it to the World Series. Devout Cleveland fans, although very grateful for their recent success, want more. Fans have a simple request: for the Cleveland Browns to win at least one game thia season.
Throughout 2016, the Browns tried their best to clean the slate for the upcoming season in order to further rebuild the franchise. In January, the Browns fired both General Manager Ray Farmer and Head Coach Mike Pettine. The Browns also let wide receiver Travis Benjamin leave, expecting the return of pro-bowl receiver Josh Gordon from his one-year suspension. Gordon left the Browns in late September to enter a rehabilitation facility and his return to the team looks rather unlikely. As a result, despite the Browns’ reluctance to sign any receiver talent, the team surprised all when they signed mediocre quarterback Robert Griffin III. Griffin’s career has been plagued with injury, and this was evident in his Week 1 debut with the Browns as he left the game with a shoulder injury. Since 1999, the Browns have started 26 different quarterbacks – an NFL high. With such uncertainty at the most important position on the field, there is no wonder why the franchise has struggled for so long.
Looking forward, the Browns have five games remaining. Is there a possibility they win a game? According to Oddsshark.com, the Browns surprisingly have an 80.6 percent of winning at least one game. Within the next six weeks, the team will face the New York Giants, Cincinnati Bengals, Buffalo Bills, San Diego Chargers and Pittsburgh Steelers. Fortunately for the Browns, all remaining teams on their schedule except the Giants have a losing record, but all are undoubtedly better than the Browns. The Browns have struggled on both sides of the football. They are 30th in points scored per game, 31st in points scored against. They are 28th in yards per game, and 31st in opponent’s yards per game. Browns fans can look forward to 2017 NFL Draft, where the team will most certainly have the number one overall pick, most likely followed by yet another sub .500 season.
