The US soccer season came to a conclusion last Saturday after a 1-0 loss against Lake Catholic. Both teams played well, but Lake Catholic finished ahead by a razor’s edge. Going into the match, the two sides looked to be dead-even – this assessment proved to be completely correct. After a 2-2 draw earlier in August, both teams were in similar form heading into the season’s most important match. Ranked #2 in the state, US was the favorite. With a season record of11-1-4, a victory Saturday would have given US its first victory over LC in two years.
The match got off to a blistering start. Many quick counter attacks and dangerous fouls yielded scoring opportunities but neither side was able to capitalize. LC had more chances in the first half, but were unable to beat US goalkeeper Will Shearon, who was in superb form. However, US had the best chance of the game in the first half – a cutting pass from Enea Cominelli found Griffin Meyer one on one with the keeper, but a diving save prevented US from seizing the lead before halftime.
It was a very physical game, with US winning most of the battles. LC conceded many fouls that US was unlucky not to score on. The referee was very busy and did a good job of keeping both teams from an all-out brawl. Many fouls, shoves, and kicks went unnoticed by the referee, but both teams played on.
After Enea Cominelli’s shot hit the crossbar, and a shot from Griffin Meyer was pushed over the bar, LC scored the only goal of the game in the 72nd minute. A scramble on the top of the box helped a LC stiker put the ball in the net. Although down 1-0, US never gave up, as they searched for a last-minute equalizer. That equalizer, however, never came.
Overall, the preppers played a great game and a great season. They were able to possess and move the ball around, and were just one goal shy of an overtime thriller. Finishing 13-2-4, the players can hold their heads high after a fantastic season. They were able to beat numerous top ten schools and finish the season undefeated at home. The program is heading in the right direction and the team will be fun to watch in the future.
