Shortly after defeating the Toronto Blue Jays in the American League Championship Series, the Chicago Cubs also booked their place in the World Series by defeating the Los Angeles Dodgers in 6 games. The Cubs and the Indians entered the series with the two longest droughts in baseball. Chicago, without a World Series victory since 1908, was the only team with a longer drought than Cleveland’s, which dates back to 1948. A 6-0 finish in Game 1 mislead Indians fans to think the series would come to an end soon enough, but losing 5-1 in Game 2 proved otherwise. The Indians triumphed in game 3 on the back of a Coco Crisp RBI and dominant pitching, and followed that up with another victory in game 4. A potential close-out game last Sunday went Chicago’s way, and as the 3-1 lead started to deteriorate, Cleveland sports fans were reminded of the 3-1 comeback the Cavaliers executed this summer over the Golden State Warriors.
Some argue the Curse of Steph’s Mouth guard has found its way to curse the Indians, while others cite simple karma. Game 5 was a minuscule defeat compared to the one delivered by Game 6. Kris Bryant starts off the first inning with a quick solo home run. Next up was a crucial routine fly ball catch gone wrong, leading to a 3-0 lead for the Cubs. Star second baseman Jason Kipnis tried to pull the Indians back with 2 solo homeruns, but was unable to make a significant dent in the Chicago lead. As Game 7 approached, Clevelanders had faith in ace Corey Kluber, but Kluber’s fatigue and overuse finally caught up with the Indians, as the Cubs tagged him for his first runs surrendered in Progressive Field in the postseason. However, when all hope appeared to be lost, facing Aroldis Chapman, one of the most intimidating pitchers in the league, Indians outfielder Rajai Davis hit a Chapman fastball into the left field bleachers to bring the Indians level. However, the Indians fell in extra innings.
Coming to school on Thursday might have been the most shameful experience for anyone in Cleveland. The embarrassment was unparalleled. Losing a 3-1 lead is a spectacle no city deserves. Personally, the defeat was crushing and caused many mixed emotions among fans. Some blame Kluber, some Francona, while some simply think that the Cubs deserved their win. Lebron James, however, congratulated the Indians on a great season, “Just want to congratulate the Indians on an unbelievable season. You guys did something that nobody would ever think you guys could do, and we’re very proud of you. The whole Cavs organization, all the fans, the whole city of Cleveland, we’re all proud of you guys. You guys got nothing to hang your heads low about. Use this as inspiration and get ready for next year”. No matter what happened in Game 7, it is agreed that the next season will be legendary for both the Cavs and the Indians.
